Description
Oral dapsone (diaminodiphenyl sulfone) is a sulphone antibiotic with potent anti-inflammatory properties. Used in dermatology for dermatitis herpetiformis, leprosy, linear IgA bullous dermatosis, and other neutrophil-mediated dermatoses. A cornerstone drug in Indian dermatology.

Indications
- Dermatitis herpetiformis

- Chronic bullous disease of childhood
- Granuloma faciale
Dosage
50–100mg daily. Start with 50mg and increase based on response. Check G6PD levels before starting.

Side Effects
- Haemolytic anaemia (dose-dependent)
- Methemoglobinaemia
- Agranulocytosis (rare but serious)
- Dapsone hypersensitivity syndrome (rare)
- Peripheral neuropathy
Warnings
- Check G6PD levels before starting — haemolysis risk in G6PD deficient patients
- Regular CBC monitoring mandatory
- Watch for dapsone hypersensitivity syndrome (fever, rash, hepatitis)
- Methemoglobin levels may need monitoring
- Avoid in severe hepatic disease
