Neem Extract

Botanical Antibacterial

Also known as: Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract, Azadirachta Indica, Indian Lilac

Description

Neem extract is derived from the leaves of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica), a plant native to the Indian subcontinent. It has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries for its antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. The active compounds include nimbin, nimbidin, and azadirachtin. [Subapriya 2005]

Mechanism of Action

Contains nimbidin and other limonoids that inhibit bacterial growth (particularly Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus) by disrupting cell membrane integrity. Azadirachtin interferes with prostaglandin synthesis, providing anti-inflammatory effects. Quercetin and other flavonoids contribute antioxidant activity, scavenging free radicals and reducing oxidative stress in the skin. [Subapriya 2005]
